Ben L. and Patricia K. (Smith) Gustin, both passed away on December 4, 2021 in Troy. Ben who was 82 died at 9:52 a.m. at Upper Valley Medical Center and Pat died at 11:55 p.m. in Koester Pavilion. Ben was born on December 2, 1939 in Piqua, and was a son of the late James Howard and Francis Ethel (Clark) Gustin. Pat was born on August 3, 1940, a daughter of the late Clarence Earl and Lora Maxine (Jay) Smith.
Ben graduated from Miami Central High School in 1957 and joined the U.S. Navy on October 30, 1957. Pat graduated in 1958 from Piqua Central High School. Ben returned from the Navy in December of 1960. He and Pat were married on May 5, 1961. Ben worked for French Oil and then went to B.F. Goodrich where he retired in 2002 as the head electrician. Pat worked as a secretary at Piqua Central High School and then became a stay at home mother.
Together, Ben and Pat raised two sons, Ben L. Jr ,and Anthony “Tony” Gustin both of Fletcher, and a daughter, Sarah (Corey) Smith of Piqua. They were loving grandparents to eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Ben is survived by a sister Barbara Robinson of Troy. Pat is survived by 3 brothers, Wade (Frieda) Smith of Piqua, Clarence (Susan) Smith, Jr. of Piqua, and Robert L. (Pat) Smith of Florida.
Both Ben and Pat were members of the Fletcher United Methodist Church. Ben formerly served as a trustee and Pat sang in the choir, helped with the preschool, and funeral meals. Ben and Pat were 4-H advisors for 45 years for the Ham and Lamb 4-H club. Ben served on the 4-H camp board. Ben also served on the Brown Township zoning board, and was a member of the Fletcher Lions Club and the Piqua Eagles. Pat was a member of the Cribs to Campus Mother’s Club of Fletcher. Together Ben and Pat loved to travel, camp and fish.
Ben was preceded in death by his siblings: James Gustin, Frances Juanita Astorino, Patricia Coleman and brother-in-law Richard Robinson. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021 in the Fletcher United Methodist Church, 205 S. Walnut Street, Fletcher, OH with Reverend Tina Fox presiding. Burial will follow in Fletcher Cemetery. There will be visitation for family and friends from 11:00 a.m. to the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday in the church.
