Max Leon Cummings

August 10, 1937 ~ May 3, 2019 (age 81)

Max Leon Cummings, age 81, of Piqua, Ohio passed away on May 3, 2019.  He was born on August 10, 1937 to the late Samuel and Alene Graves Cummings. He married Joyce Kessler Cummings April 22,2000.  He is survived by four children:  Russell Cummings of MacDonald Tennessee; Sandy Jo (David) Heller of Ocala, Florida; Kenneth (Tamara) Kessler of Powell, Ohio; Jerry (Sara) Kessler of Fort Loramie, Ohio and six grandchildren:  Amanda and Nicole Kessler, Andrew and Adrienne Kessler, Alina (Gregg) Nimmo and Misty Dixon. Max is also survived by three brothers:  Howard (Sarah Lou) Cummings of Maryville, Tennessee; Larry (Nola) Cummings of Rockford, Tennessee; Kyle (Judy) Cummings of Walland, Tennessee and (Nola) Cummings of Rockford, Tennessee, and one sister Hilda (Charles) Presley of Maryville, Tennessee.  He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Chester Cummings, and grandchildren Ashley Heller and Casey Cummings. Max was a 1956 graduate of Maryville High School and served in the US Marines.  He studied at Maryville College, University of Tennessee and Dayton Art Institute.  He was a member of the Union Baptist church and played in their Hand Bell Choir. Max was a member of Gideons International. He was a member of various Art Organizations including Piqua Visual Arts, Piqua Arts Council, Greenville Art Guild, Gateway Arts Council, Valley Arts and Crafts Club, Piqua Heritage Festival Committee.  Max taught Art classes for many years in Piqua. Max worked for many years as a commercial artist and teacher.  He has received numerous awards for his artwork.  Max’s paintings hang in the Piqua Library, many businessmen’s offices and several government offices in the U.S. and in Japan. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, 2:00 Union Baptist Church 1833 E. Peterson Road, Troy, Ohio 45373 with Pastor Dale Adkins presiding.  There will be visitation from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Burial will follow in the Miami Memorial Park, Covington, Ohio.
